Old Man's Cave - Beautiful Unique Scenic Waterfalls Park OH

Old Man's Cave is a beautiful section of Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio that contains a number of scenic waterfalls.

The Old Man's Cave is a unique beautiful scenic area that contains a number of pretty waterfalls located in Hocking Hills State Park in south-central Ohio. The Old Man's Cave section of the park consists of the large recessed Old Man's Cave along with a half mile long gorge filled with beautiful rock formations and natural wonders including waterfalls along the Old Man's Creek.

The Old Man's Cave is named after hermit and trapper Richard Rowe who lived in the cave off and on for nearly 50 years beginning in the early 1800's. Rowe died in the cave area in the mid to late 1850's when he accidentally shot himself while trying to break ice on the creek with the butt of his rifle and it discharged killing him. He is buried near the Old Man's Cave entrance.

Upper Falls

The Upper Falls is a beautiful scenic 20 foot high waterfall along Old Man's Creek that drops just below a footbridge at the upper end of the gorge.

Middle Falls

The Middle Falls consists of a series of small waterfalls that drop over ledges along Old Man's Creek as it winds its way down the gorge.

Lower Falls

The Lower Falls is located at the end of the gorge and consists of a 25 foot high waterfall that slides for a bit along a small cliff face before plunging into a beautiful pool of water that is a popular wading and cooling off spot in summer.

The Old Man's Cave section of Hocking Hills State Park is located right off Route 664 at the northern end of the park in south-central Ohio about 40 miles west of Columbus and 80 miles northeast of Cincinnati. The Old Man's Cave is probably the most popular area in Hocking Hills Park but it is not the only beautiful area of the park and not the only waterfalls part either. There are two other sections of Hocking Hills State Park that contain waterfalls and all three areas can be hiked to along the Grandma Gatewood Trail section of the Buckeye Trail going south starting from the Upper Falls at Old Man's Cave. The other two waterfall areas are 50 foot high Cedar Falls and 90 foot high Ash Cave Falls at the southern end of the trail.

The Old Man's Cave area has a visitor's center and picnic tables. There are overnight accommodations in Hocking Hills State Park consisting of cabins, cottages and campgrounds. Overnight visitors can also rent cabins, lodges and log homes from Old Man's Cave Chalets located right along Route 664 near the Old Man's Cave area of the park. Old Man's Cave is a magical beautiful place to visit in Ohio.
